This class is taught by:

Kevin Baynes

Kevin has always been in the water for one reason or another. He learned to swim at the age of 4. At age 6, he began to swim for the Chantilly National Bluefins under Nancy Monaghan until the age of 18. After his last year of swimming competitively, he began to lifeguard for NV Pools for the next three years where he taught group and private swim lessons throughout the summer. In 2010, Kevin was the assistant coach of the Stone Ridge Sharks. He is currently enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College where he is studying engineering and is planning to transfer at the end of Spring ‘15. Kevin joined Machine Swim School in Spring ‘13 and has enjoyed his time working here. When Kevin is out of the water, he likes spending his time watching TV, playing soccer, and hanging out with friends and family.

Maggie Nelsen

Maggie Nelsen grew up in Vienna, Virginia and attended The Potomac School in McLean. Throughout her high school and college years she lifeguarded and taught swim lessons at Potomac’s Summer Programs. After graduating from Connecticut College, Maggie was a middle and high school teacher in Malaysia for two years. She has recently moved back to the area and is excited to continue working with children and adolescents at Machine.

Paul Hart

Paul began swimming at age 9 with the Wakefield Chapel Wahoos and shortly after began swimming year round with the Starlit Aquatic Club until graduation from high school and swimming briefly for the University of Virginia swim team. Paul also swam for Bishop Ireton High School and has many fond memories of being a member of this team.
Paul has had several coaching positions over the years: Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet for 4 summers, assistant coach for Paul VI High School for 2 seasons, Victor Swim Club for 7 years, Country Club of Fairfax for 3 summers, and 2 years with the Potomac Marlins.
Paul swam for the Fairfax and Clark masters programs for a few seasons and now swims, on and off, for fitness. Paul has competed in a few triathlons but does not enjoy the running portions; if there were more biathlons he might compete more regularly.
Paul enjoys helping young people increase their swimming skills so that they have more fun in the water, success at whatever level of competition they choose to compete, and hopefully develop increased self-confidence and discipline along the way. Paul works as a psychotherapist for adolescents, adults and families when not at Machine Swim School.

Claire Bell

Claire started swimming when she was 8 years old with Hunter Mill Swim, and started swimming competitively at 12.  She coached Hunter Mill’s Mini Sharks, and taught private lessons. Claire Continued to swim recreationally but decided to dedicate her time to volleyball and swim recreationally after that. Claire and her father started Vienna Youth Volleyball and Vienna Elite volleyball club, and Claire has been an active coach and referee ever since.   She got back into swimming when she came to work with Machine at the front desk in the Summer of 2015. Claire studies Kinesiology at George Mason University. While she hopes to one day get her masters in Pediatric Occupational Therapy and continue to work with Children.   When Claire isn’t in the water or at the front desk she enjoys spending her time playing beach volleyball or hanging out with her two dogs, her family and her friends.
